Minister decides not to intervene in the uncertain steel PRN market (19/08/2009)

The government has decided not to reduce the target for recycling steel packaging which would help UK businesses deal with escalating costs caused by a lack of PRN evidence from the global slowdown.

Under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 (as amended), businesses must purchase material specific PRNs to offset packaging handled.   Defra suggested help was needed to alleviate the lack of evidence, however, following an encouraging second quarter in steel recycling, the Environment Agency has written to compliance schemes, such as Budget Pack, to confirm this suggestion would not be taken forward.

Quarter two this year has seen an increase in steel recycling and recovery, increasing by 64% when compared with quarter one.

With some studies suggesting that the UK could be short by nearly 70,000 tonnes, the EA is urging schemes to take “prompt and corrective action” to ensure they meet targets.

Budget Pack is a expert scheme provider and has great experience in procuring PRNs in challenging times to minimise the cost implications to its members.   Budget Pack achieves it’s compliance through a broad supplier base giving its members piece of mind and added security.

Budget Pack strategically works to purchase PRNs at the most optimum points in the market.  Although the market for steel PRNs looks increasingly unpredictable and has the potential to continue increasing in cost, Budget Pack has been able to cap its steel price through fixed price contracts with suppliers for the remainder of the year.

Stephen Clark, Managing Director of Budget Pack added: “This is great news for our members as we are able to demonstrate our commitment to achieving lower prices that the typical market average, keeping our member costs down in this difficult economic climate.”
