Budget Pack gains batteries scheme approval (30/09/2009)
At 12:23 today (30th September 2009) Budget Pack received confirmation that it has been granted batteries compliance scheme status.
Budget Pack has been a leading compliance scheme since 2003 and ensures its members benefit from a cost effective personal approach to compliance. Budget Pack can now provide total compliance across the three producer responsibility regulations, so that companies can register through one scheme for all their compliance needs.
The team at Budget Pack are proud that their efforts to create a compliance scheme acting in the best interest of their members has been recognised through batteries scheme approval. This allows us the opportunity to provide the same level of service for our affiliate schemes members and trade associations.
A great deal of preparation has been put in place as we enter the final 15 days of registration. Producers have a challenging task ahead to get registered by this deadline. At Budget Pack we have streamlined our systems to allow simple application via our website and our dedicated account managers are ready to answer the many questions that producers may have.
We have been building our collection infrastructure for Batteries over the last year and have strong partnerships with batteries collectors and local authorities. Our three main contractors have over 60 years combined experience in collecting and recycling batteries, with national coverage and an extensive UK collection hub and logistics network. We feel confident that we will provide one of the most secure and cost effective solutions to meet the requirements to recycle 10% of batteries in 2010 up to the 45% by 2016.
Budget Pack Managing Director Steve Clark said “Our Batteries Scheme approval is the culmination of 7 years of professionalism in bringing quality and fairness to the market. Our commitment to our members in providing pragmatic solutions to these complex markets is second to none. We are compelled to continue our efforts to minimise the impact of the regulations on our clients. We’ve had a tremendous response from Batteries producers and distributors as we can offer flexible low cost membership, which is not constrained by corporate policies, whilst offering real solutions at best value across packaging, WEEE and batteries.”
Victoria Wood, Environment Manager at Sky said “BSkyB have selected Budget Pack as their Batteries Compliance Scheme as they have an innovative approach to ensure secure, lower cost recycling evidence is provided to their members. We also recognise the time savings they provide through a personal approach and simple systems for data submission and collections”

Notes to editors:
The UK batteries regulations place responsibility on ‘producers’ who place more than a tonne of portable batteries on the UK market, a year. The regulations require ‘producers’ to finance collection and recycling of these batteries and will need to register with a compliance scheme, such as Budget Pack. There are also requirements for companies that place industrial, automotive and less than 1 tonne of portable batteries on the UK market.
The regulations have been implemented to reduce the 600 million portable batteries that currently end up in UK landfill sites each year. To achieve this targets have been set requiring 25% of batteries to be recycled by 2012 increasing to 45% by 2016.
