Budget Pack launches its power tool compliance services (07/10/2009)

Under the new batteries regulations, Budget Pack has launched its specialist compliance services for the UK’s branded power tool manufacturers.

Stephen Clark, MD of Budget Pack explained how the approach worked. “We have studied power tool battery recycling in several other countries and established plans for the most appropriate takeback and collection system for the UK. Working with our stakeholder members, we are implementing an industry-specific system to market and collect power tool batteries and offset the costs of these members by doing so.

Although the majority of companies in the Power Tool sector have already supported our industry approach, we are still welcoming producers into the scheme to benefit from our industry-wide focus. We are promoting a discount for those industry stakeholders that join before midnight on Thursday 8th October and urge companies to get in touch if they haven’t already done so.”

Peter Thompson from WE3 Compliance manages the WEEE obligations for much of the sector and has partnered with Budget Pack to provide compliance support for batteries. Pete explained “we obtained information from all the main battery schemes and in our opinion Budget-Pack addressed all the required points in a professional, thoughtful, practical and comprehensive manner. Furthermore we believe they offer the most cost-effective solution for the industry into the future. We are therefore recommending Budget-Pack to our members.

George Richardson from Bosch further endorsed the approach “One of Bosch's Core Values is that we accept that our actions must accord with the interests of society. Above all else we continually strive to achieve economic use of resources and environmental sustainability. We are convinced Budget Pack’s personal approach and attention to detail across both its membership services and operational contracts is the best solution to help us live these values.”

Crispin Dunn-Meynell from PETMA (Portable Electric Tool Manufacturers Association) added ‘We are looking forward to working with Budget Pack and our members to develop an efficient collection network, which will help keep the industry’s costs down to a minimum."

The Budget Pack collection network will build on the experience of previous initiatives such as Makita’s recent Drop-Dead-Battery campaign as Tony Coleman explained: “Makita collected batteries from a range of different locations and will be working with Budget Pack to pass on the lessons learnt. We are committed to minimising the environmental impact from doing business and are keen to benefit from the efficiencies of Budget Pack’s industry-wide approach which will bring economic benefits to all those involved.”

Patrick Fogarty from Hitachi Power Tools also confirmed their membership of the scheme saying “We want to meet our environmental obligations and achieve best value. We are confident that Budget Pack’s unique and personal approach will deliver full compliance at lowest cost”.
