<item><title>Festive WEEE Recycling Campaign Launched</title><description>
The Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has teamed up with The Waste Resources Action Program (WRAP) for the long awaited government consumer campaign to encourage the separate collection of WEEE. The focus of the campaign will be on increasing the collection and recycling of small domestic appliances such as kettles and toasters by encouraging consumers to visit the WRAP website to find out where they can recycle their old products either through in-store take back schemes or via their local council waste collection site.

<item><title>New battery regulations now in force</title><description>


	From the 26th September 2006 it became illegal to put new batteries on the market (including appliances which incorporate batteries) that do not comply with the requirements of the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008 (SI 2008/2164).


	Key requirements


	&#8226;&amp;nbsp;New materials prohibitions on the use of mercury and cadmium in the manufacture of batteries
		&#8226;&amp;nbsp; Labelling must include the &#8220;crossed out wheeled-bin&#8221; symbol and the chemical symbol for lead, mercury or cadmium where appropriate


	&#8226;&amp;nbsp;Batteries must be able to be removed from appliances and appliances designed in order that waste batteries can be readily removed


	&#8226;&amp;nbsp;An enforcement body is to be appointed by BERR to ensure a level playing field for anyone placing batteries on the market
